Julia Faye Smith, 7th grade
After 35 years of teaching reading and history, I decided to pursue my passion for storytelling through historical fiction novels, family history stories, and biographies, including untold stories of famous Americans. My ultimate goal is to create powerful stories that resonate with readers and bring history to life in a meaningful way.
My most successful book to date has been a biography of Ann Cole Lowe, America’s unknown fashion designer. That’s what she was when I found her nine years ago. I met her in an airport. I was in the airport, she wasn't. She died decades ago, but as I was surfing the net I came upon two sentences about her. A 'did you know' kind of post. I was blown away, for no, I didn't know, and I thought I should. There were only two online references to Ann, so I started digging, going in through the back door , so to speak. She was, in her own words, a "design snob." But she was, oh, so much more.
I am the wife of one, mother of three, and grandmother of five. Family is important to me. Education is also important to me, both formal education and education learned through experiences. Because of that, I have introduced all my grandchildren to history, historical places, and museums. Now, a couple of them are old enough to be introducing me to those experiences. I love it!
Travel is important to us. I was born on a small farm in Alabama. To find myself standing in the Uffizi or the Louvre has been extraordinary as has the opportunity to stand atop a 14,000 footer in Colorado.
My husband’s career in journalism has taken us across the US and back enhancing my knowledge and understanding of the world. We’ve lived in 31 homes, rehabbing many of them. At present, in our retirement, we live in north Florida 35 miles from a small undiscovered beach---our own private beach we like to think of it. With sunny days and straight roads, we are there often.
I guess I’ll always be reading, always be writing, and hopefully, always learning. Thanks for reading.
